Who Destroyed The Gaspee?

The proceedings of the General Assembly, relative to the destruction of the British schooner Gaspee, in the waters of Narragansett Bay on the night of 9th June 1772, will be found in the records of the August session of year. [Source]

The Gaspee Organization makes the case that Barzillai Richmond (and his son and son-in-law)  participated in "the 1772 burning of the hated British revenue schooner, HMS Gaspee, by Rhode Island patriots as America's 'First Blow for Freedom'TM."

Destruction Of The Gaspee

The Gaspee was pursuing [a] packet from Newport, when it ran aground... . That evening....as many as 67 colonists...seized control of the ship, shooting its Scottish captain, Lieutenant William Dudingston, in the abdomen. After sending the wounded captain and his crew to shore at Pawtuxet, the Americans set the Gaspee on fire.  [Source]

This is to certify that I was present on the 25th of November 1786, when the marriage ceremony was performed by Lieut. Col. John Butler, late Butler's Rangers, between the late John Clement, Lieut. late Six Nations Indian Department, and my sister Mary Ball, and that they lived together as man and wife until his death.

Geo. Ball

This is to certify that I am personally acquainted with the above named George Ball who is now in the eighty-ninth year of his age, but of sound mind and memory, that I also know Mary Clement, and that she was the wife of the late John Clement, late of the Indian Department.

Colonel Martin, A Confederate Spy In Canada

The Review Of Historical Publications Relating To Canada included an article entitled Confederate Agents In Canada During The American Civil War (text version).

"The secret military and political organization which the Confederacy of the Southern States built up in Canada during the Civil War centered mainly about the personality of the Hon. Jacob Thompson."

However, fellow William Roark descendant, Confederate Colonel Robert Maxwell Martin, made a cameo appearance:

"Meantime Toronto had been the scene of another plot, this time for the burning of New York. A Colonel Martin had reported to the Confederate chief for duty, and the latter tells us that "having nothing else on hand Colonel Martin expressed a wish to organize a corps to burn New York City."
