News Briefs From Elba, Michigan, 11 January 1899

From the Lapeer Democrat, 11 January 1899:

ELBA

Wirt Winship* and wife entertained about thirty relatives Christmas among whom were J. T. and Mrs. Rich of Detroit**. A bountiful dinner was served after which a Christmas ladder was disburdened of its load of gifts. *Son of Nehemiah & Mary (Gale) Winship **Probably Governor & Lucretia (Winship) Rich - Lucretia & Nehemiah were siblings

A very pretty wedding at Oscar Moore's December 24th at which time his daughter Allie was united in marriage with Albert Leicester of Pontiac.

Carl L. Barker of Chicago and Charley Tucker of Flint spent the Monday following Christmas at Mrs. Jno. Winship's. Note: John Winship was probably the brother of Nehemiah & Lucretia Winship

Arthur Moore and wife entertained a party of eighteen relatives and friends New Year's day.

Misses Bertha and Sadie Winship attended the theater at Flint Monday evening.

R. J. McEntee accompanied by Mary Allen spent Saturday with his sister at Capac.

Misses Bertha and Georgia Winship visiting relatives at Grand Rapids and Ionia. Note: Georgia Melissa Winship, age 46, married (as his 2nd wife) Governor John T. Rich on 2 Nov 1915. Georgia was Wirt Winship's sister.

Ward Angle spent Sunday with his brother at Lapeer.

Mrs. A. L. Moore, at Lapeer Monday.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Will Rice, January 5th, a son.

Levi Moore and wife are again with us. Note: Probably referring to James Levi & Rosaltha (Farrar) More. James and my great-grandmother, Addie (More) Powers, were siblings.

Saturday evening Mrs. Winship discovered that their house was on fire. Fortunately Mr. Winship was at home and they summoned Frank Griswold and wife and succeeded in extinguishing the flames, not, however, without tearing down the partition between two rooms.
